While forex trading is accessible to both novice and experienced traders, some brokers go a step further by offering enhanced trading conditions tailored to professional traders. These premium accounts provide experienced traders with a strategic edge by unlocking benefits that are unavailable to retail traders.

If you are ready to elevate your forex trading and apply for professional status, several forex brokers offer institutional accounts. These brands provide competitive trading conditions to their professional clients, featuring tight spreads, competitive commission rates, and higher leverage that significantly exceeds standard regulatory retail limits.

Testing Methodology
Each broker’s professional account offering was tested by our team over 45 days between February and March 2026. Our team assessed the leverage available to professional clients, eligibility requirements, compliance with local regulations, and any additional account features. We also noted which protections professional clients lose and which still apply. Additionally, we evaluated the quality of professional customer support, especially where this included a dedicated account manager. We mainly used MT5 and MT4 to execute trades with the maximum leverage available, except for CMC Markets, where we used the broker’s proprietary platforms. For deeper insights, you can check our full testing methodology.

Best Forex Brokers for Professional Traders Ranked by Trustpilot Score

Fusion Markets

Based on our hands-on experience with this broker, Fusion Markets’ Fusion Pro offers good trading conditions for seasoned traders. Leverage of up to 1:500, rebates, a dedicated account manager, instant support, and priority access to new products and services are the key advantages of using this account. Our testing also showed that opening this type of account requires a Wealth Test or a Sophisticated Investor Test, and we verified that each option aligns with ASIC’s professional trading requirements.

Furthermore, clients’ funds are protected in a segregated client trust account with a major bank. However, negative balance protection, Product Disclosure Statements, and Financial Services Guides are not provided to Pro clients.

Higher leverage ratios are available across all supported products at Fusion Markets. Professional traders can access up to 1:500 on major and minor currency pairs, as well as gold, commodities, and energies. Clients of Fusion Markets can upgrade to professional status by completing a Wealth Test or a Sophisticated Investor Test.

To prove you are eligible to conduct trades on a larger scale as a professional trader, you should confirm that you own net assets worth at least AU$2.5 million, and you must obtain a certificate from a qualified accountant dated within the previous six months. The entire list of requirements you should meet to qualify for a professional trading account at Fusion Markets can be found on the broker’s official website. We offer a brief overview below:

Criteria for Professional Traders at Fusion Markets

Large-Volume TradesRelevant Working ExperienceCapital Requirement

BlackBull Markets

BlackBull Markets provides professional traders with an advanced trading environment tailored to high-volume and institutional-level trading. The broker was established in 2014 and is regulated by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) of New Zealand and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) of Seychelles. It offers professional clients leverage of up to 1:500 and execution speeds of under 75 ms through the invite-only Prime+ account. According to our hands-on evaluation, the EUR/USD spread averaged 0.1 pips, which, when combined with the $3 commission, resulted in total costs of $4 per side during our testing.

Additionally, Prime+ account holders benefit from rebates, and the exact rebate amount is based on trading volume. We were able to reach Diamond level with a monthly volume of 1,200 lots on metals and forex, which translated to a rebate of $2 per lot.

Professional traders at BlackBull Markets benefit from deep liquidity, access to premium trading tools, and a dedicated account manager to assist with their trading needs. Additionally, the institutional-grade account allows for customizable trading conditions and priority support. While professional status unlocks greater trading flexibility, traders should be aware that certain regulatory protections, such as negative balance protection, may not apply.

To qualify for a professional account at BlackBull Markets, traders may need to meet specific eligibility criteria related to trading experience, portfolio size, or trading volume. Further information on professional account requirements is available on the broker’s official website.

IC Markets

There are three different account types you can choose from as an IC Markets customer. If you believe that you have the balance and skills to engage in professional trading, you may want to consider opening a professional account.

The brand offers its professional customers a high level of protection, including segregation of client funds. That said, those who opt for professional accounts must keep in mind that they will be excluded from the Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) program, as it is available only to retail customers. There is also an option to revert to retail client status, granting traders greater flexibility.

Many traders may consider applying for a professional trading account with IC Markets as it removes leverage restrictions, allowing the use of a leverage ratio of up to 1:500 on major forex pairs. IC Markets has adopted a rather standard application procedure for professional accounts, requiring larger-volume trades in the relevant market, with at least 10 high-volume trades made per quarter in the last four quarters. Traders should also prove they have professional experience of at least one year in the financial sector, and the size of their financial instruments portfolio must amount to at least €500,000. The portfolio requirement refers to the total value of financial instruments and cash deposits held across all of the applicant’s accounts, not just those held with the broker being applied to. Applicants typically provide recent bank or brokerage statements as evidence.

Global Prime

To gain access to more advanced trading conditions like higher leverage, Global Prime members can apply for a professional trading account. Those who qualify for professional status will be able to use leverage of up to 1:500 on certain tradable instruments. Under ASIC’s rules, our testers were able to use leverage of up to 1:500 on major and minor forex pairs after creating a professional account. Leverage caps for major and minor indices, gold, other commodities, and bonds stood at 1:100, while trading US shares involved leverage of up to 1:20. We were also able to trade cryptocurrencies with maximum leverage of 1:5.

The professional trading tier also provides early access to newly released products and advanced trading services. Trading rebates are another advantage worth mentioning, with this type of incentive based on trading volume and customer referrals. Applicants must bear in mind that professional accounts are not covered by the Investor Compensation Fund (ICF) or negative balance protection.

Getting a dedicated account manager is yet another benefit of trading as a professional client of Global Prime. Professional clients can also skip the support queue whenever they wish to speak to a Global Prime representative.

To qualify for the professional trading account at Global Prime, you must complete the broker’s Sophisticated Investor Test and Wealth Test. The former requires passing a pro trading knowledge quiz and placing 20 trades per quarter, with trades’ notional volume being equal to or exceeding AU$1,000,000 per quarter in any four quarters within the last two years. You may also provide proof of work experience of at least one year in the financial sector. For the wealth requirement, you can either hold net assets of at least AU$2.5 million in the last six months or have an annual income of AU$250,000 or more over the previous two years.

Criteria for Professional Traders at Global Prime

Large-Volume TradesRelevant Working ExperienceCapital Requirement
20 per quarter; notional volume of AU$1,000,000 over 4 quarters in the last 2 years1 yearNet assets of at least AU$2.5 million or gross income of AU$250,000 per annum

FXCM

In addition to retail trading accounts, FXCM also offers the option to apply for a professional account, which unlocks many advanced features like higher leverage, up to 1:400, and access to exclusive products and services. Those who wish to place orders as professional traders must be aware that they will not be eligible for additional protection tools like negative balance protection, leverage limits on high-risk products, and investor compensation schemes. Professional traders will not receive Product Disclosure Statements or Financial Services Guides.

To apply for a professional account, FXCM members must meet certain criteria. These include carrying out at least 10 large-volume trades per quarter in the last four quarters, maintaining a portfolio of at least €500,000, and having work experience of at least one year in a relevant financial field, which ensures knowledge of the products to be traded. To make qualification easier, the broker requires its customers to meet only two of the three criteria for professional traders.

Criteria for Professional Traders at FXCM

Large-Volume TradesRelevant Working ExperienceCapital Requirement

Saxo

Saxo can offer strong trading conditions to retail traders, but certain regulatory limits can be bypassed only by creating a professional trading account with the broker. While trading as a professional unlocks higher leverage and early access to products and services, it also means giving up some safeguard tools like negative balance protection and leverage limits on high-risk products.

While evaluating the broker’s professional offering, we were able to trade with higher leverage of up to 1:66 on forex majors like EUR/USD and 1:50 on forex minors like EUR/GBP. As for the rest of Saxo’s product range, trading major indices, such as the UK100 and S&P 500, involved leverage of up to 1:40. Additionally, for gold and minor indices like the FTSE 250 and AUS200, our available leverage was 1:33. Commodity and share products involved leverage of up to 1:25 and 1:10, respectively.

Professional traders will be given the opportunity to use a portfolio-based margin model, where instead of applying a predetermined margin, the broker will allow professionals to open positions with margin based on specific risk factors. In addition, professional traders can use some of their portfolio products as collateral for their margin trading sessions. To request professional client status, you need to complete a form and submit any required information. The requirements you should meet to become a professional trader at Saxo include placing 10 large-sized orders in the last four quarters, having at least one year of work experience in the financial field, and owning a portfolio with instruments whose value equals at least €500,000 or $500,000.

AvaTrade

While AvaTrade strives to offer competitive trading conditions to its retail clients, regulatory requirements mean these accounts come with certain limitations because of the high risk of trading financial instruments with high leverage. However, our team was able to lift those restrictions by applying for a professional trading account at AvaTrade. Professional client status at the broker enables trading major forex pairs with leverage of up to 1:400, with other tradable instruments also offering significantly higher leverage caps.

To meet the eligibility requirements, our testers provided proof of having traded at least 10 large-sized orders in relevant markets in the last four quarters. During the application process, we found that the only relevant instruments were OTC derivatives like CFDs or forex.

Candidates must also provide account statements from the previous month, with data on trades made with regulated brokers. Traders must also confirm they have the experience to trade professionally, with work experience of at least one year in the financial sector, showing they have the required knowledge about OTC derivatives. Professional experience can be proven by providing a letter from an employer, confirming the trader’s role in the respective company.

Last but not least, professional account applicants must provide a recent bank or investment account statement confirming the worth of their financial instrument portfolio, which must exceed €500,000.

Plus500

Plus500 offers both retail and professional trading accounts to accommodate traders with different levels of experience and risk appetite. While gaining professional trading status will eliminate leverage limits on high-risk instruments and certain investor protections, trading with a professional account at Plus500 grants access to several exclusive perks.

By opening a professional account, we gained access to leverage of up to 1:300 for indices (S&P 500, DAX, FTSE 100) and currency pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY). For ETFs, the limit for professionals is set at 1:100. We traded crypto and stock CFDs with leverage of 1:20, while for commodities like gold, we had leverage of 1:150 to work with. The instruments with the lowest available leverage are options, as leverage is capped at 1:5.

Unlike many other brokers, Plus500 also extends negative balance protection to professional clients, alongside benefits such as fast order execution, client money protection, and cash rebate programs.

To be eligible for a professional account at Plus500, you must have made at least 10 large-sized orders per quarter in the last four quarters, maintain a portfolio that exceeds €500,000, and have professional experience of at least one year in the financial sector. Customers are free to return to a retail account at any time by contacting a member of the support staff.

FP Markets

While FP Markets offers several account types suitable for retail traders, the broker is also prepared to meet the needs of more advanced traders. After our team’s professional account application was approved, we were able to trade with leverage of up to 1:500 when focusing on major FX pairs like EUR/USD. The same maximum applies to CFDs on other pairs such as GBP/USD and USD/CAD, as well as gold and silver.

Besides forex and precious metals, we also examined the rest of FP Markets’ instrument offering. Major indices such as DAX and the S&P 500 and minor indices such as USDX have a leverage cap of 1:200, while for most commodities, the limit tightens to 1:100. Last but not least, we were able to trade CFDs on shares and crypto (BTC, LTC) with leverage of up to 1:20 and 1:2, respectively. Note that these limits may differ depending on your jurisdiction. The aforementioned limits applied to the accounts we created at the European FP Markets entity. For clients in Australia, for example, crypto derivatives can be traded with leverage of 1:5.

We were also assigned a personal account manager who was quick to answer all of our questions. Furthermore, they provided immediate assistance when an issue with our debit card issuer necessitated switching our withdrawal method. Creating a professional account involves waiving certain client protections. Our pro accounts lost access to negative balance protection, and we were no longer eligible for compensation under the Investor Compensation Fund (ICF).

To be eligible to trade as a professional at FP Markets, you must have made at least 10 large-sized trades on a relevant market per quarter in the previous four quarters. The rest of the requirements include maintaining a portfolio with instruments worth at least €500,000, as well as providing proof of having worked for at least one year in the financial sector.

CMC Markets

If you believe you can benefit from upgrading your trading status at CMC Markets, you can check whether the professional trading account is the right solution for you. You should be aware that opening a professional account with CMC Markets will eliminate some high-risk trading protections like regular warnings, leverage caps, and negative balance protection. That said, professional traders are allowed to trade instruments with significantly higher leverage, which could reach up to 1:500 for forex.

During our evaluation of the broker’s professional account and the CMC Markets proprietary platform, we benefited from minimum margins of 0.20% on major forex pairs such as EUR/USD and AUD/USD, which translates to maximum leverage of 1:500. For gold, the maximum leverage is lower at 1:200, while other commodities can be traded with leverage of 1:133. CFDs on BTC, ETH, SOL, and XRP have a cap of 1:100. For other cryptos, the available leverage stands at 1:20. Finally, stock trading involves leverage of 1:40.

In addition to a higher leverage ratio across all supported tradable instruments, CMC Markets’ professional account also unlocks access to perks like forex rebates, products and services that have not been released to retail customers, and fund protection through a segregated trust account.

If you own net assets of at least AU$2.5 million or your annual gross income for the last two years amounts to at least AU$250,000, then you have passed the Wealth Test required for professional trading at CMC Markets. Additionally, traders must complete a test to prove their trading knowledge and demonstrate their trading experience by completing the steps available on the Pro Account page of CMC Markets.

IG

If you engage in various forms of trading through IG’s platform, you have the opportunity to unlock advanced trading conditions by creating a professional account with the broker. To assess IG’s professional offering, our reviewers created a professional account at IG’s FCA-regulated entity. This allowed us to use 95% of our account assets as collateral during margin trading, which translated to leverage of 1:200. We should note that for Australian traders, the minimum margin requirement is even lower at 0.4%, meaning that pro users who reside in Australia can use leverage of up to 1:250.

Additionally, we were entitled to a dedicated account management team and received a free trial of the ProRealTime platform lasting three months. Professionals are also granted free access to IG Smart Portfolios.

Advanced trading through a professional account at IG unlocks higher leverage on all tradable instruments, access to more tradable products, and a margin reduction of up to 90%. Professional clients will also have the chance to use up to 95% of the assets in their portfolios as collateral during margin trading.

To confirm you qualify for a professional trading account at IG, you must fulfill a few requirements. If you have placed at least 10 orders of a significant volume per quarter during the last four quarters and your financial instrument portfolio exceeds €500,000, then you are eligible for a professional account. There is also a requirement for professional experience in the financial sector of at least one year, but traders are required to meet only two of the three conditions to be eligible for IG’s professional trading account.

Criteria for Professional Traders at IG

Axi

Axi offers several account types designed to suit different trading styles and experience levels. Retail customers can choose from Standard and Pro account options, with each offering either a low-spread or no-commission pricing model.

Due to mandatory regulatory restrictions imposed by CySEC, ASIC, and the FCA, Axi cannot offer its retail forex customers leverage above 1:30. However, traders who meet the professional trading requirements of the respective Axi entity can access leverage of up to 1:400 (Standard and Pro) or 1:500 (Elite account).

Our team was able to open a professional account by meeting the eligibility requirements, which include placing at least 10 large-volume trades in each quarter of the last four quarters, having an investment portfolio that exceeds €500,000, and having work experience of at least one year in the financial sector. For Australian traders, the large-volume condition requires at least 20 large-volume trades (minimum AU$500,000) in any four quarters in the last three years. Meanwhile, the capital requirement is for net assets of at least AU$2.5 million or a gross income of at least AU$250,000 in each of the previous two years.

What Is an Institutional Trading Account?

Institutional trading accounts, also known as professional accounts, cater specifically to traders and organizations that consistently execute high-volume orders or maintain significant capital. These accounts provide a crucial strategic advantage by granting access to conditions unavailable to standard retail clients, such as higher leverage, tighter spreads, and lower commission rates.

The key benefits and features of professional trading accounts are as follows:

  • Higher Leverage: Professional traders often qualify for maximum leverage ratios that exceed regulatory retail limits (e.g., higher than the standard 1:30 in Europe).
  • Superior Pricing: They benefit from tighter spreads and competitive, lower commission rates, substantially reducing the cost per trade.
  • Enhanced Market Access: Brokers frequently offer professional clients direct access to higher liquidity pools, which can result in superior order execution and minimal slippage.
  • Dedicated Support: This type of account usually includes exclusive features like advanced tools for market analysis and a dedicated account manager to provide personalized support.

The variety of advanced features that come with professional trading is available only to traders who qualify for institutional accounts. To be eligible to open such a trading account, traders or institutions must satisfy a set of strict criteria, typically demonstrating significant trading activity, sufficient capital, and relevant professional experience. Clients must provide several documents to the broker to prove they meet the necessary regulatory thresholds for professional trading.

Who Qualifies as an Institutional Client?

While anyone interested in trading with a small budget can qualify as a retail trader, specific institutions and individuals fall under the category of professional or institutional clients. Typically, institutional investors are companies or organizations that trade funds on behalf of individuals or groups of investors.

Some examples of entities that may apply for professional trading accounts include hedge funds, pension funds, and insurance companies. Because institutional traders buy and sell substantial amounts, they are often considered the more sophisticated participants in the forex and broader financial markets. In addition to non-bank institutions, individuals who are well-experienced in the financial markets and have the capital to trade larger amounts can also apply for professional trading accounts at many reputable online forex brokers.

Application Process and Requirements for Institutional Accounts

The application process for professional trading accounts can be slightly different depending on the broker you plan to join as an institutional investor. If you want to upgrade your retail trading status or open a new institutional account with a forex broker, you will need to provide several documents. These documents will serve as proof of your tradable capital and trading experience. While there are three main qualification criteria for professional traders, it is possible to qualify by meeting just two of them.

Professional traders must:

  • Have placed at least 10 large-volume trades per quarter in the last four quarters
  • Have previous or current work experience of at least one year in the financial sector
  • Have a portfolio of at least €500,000

Depending on your country of residence and the regulator overseeing forex trading services in your jurisdiction, the minimum portfolio requirement may have a different limit that needs to be surpassed by professional traders. Usually, brokers consider trades of €10,000, €50,000, or higher to meet the condition for large-volume trades. However, if the broker has not specified what counts as a large trade size, you can contact the support team and ask for additional information. Copies of trading activity statements, investment portfolios, and proof of work experience are some of the documents you may be asked to provide during the institutional account application process.

Benefits of Using Institutional Accounts

To help you decide whether institutional accounts are the right trading solution for you, compare the strengths and weaknesses of this trading option.

Key Pros

  • Professional traders enjoy better trading prices with lower spreads
  • Higher-volume trades are easily accessible through larger maximum tradable lots
  • Institutional accounts come with higher deposit limits, enabling larger transactions
  • Professional traders can trade currency pairs with significantly higher leverage ratios

Key Cons

  • Application for institutional accounts requires traders to provide a set of documents to prove eligibility
  • Institutional trading comes with significantly higher risk when trading higher volumes
  • You need to own assets of significant value to qualify for professional trading
  • Brokers are not obligated to offer negative balance protection to professional traders
